25 Year Old – College Freshman

17 Sep

That sounds almost as bad as 40-year-old virgin, but still like kinda far from it right? (I hope) It may have taken me longer than the average bear to decide what I want to do with my life and even longer to decide I should indeed go to college but I’m finally there and it feels great.

I was one of those people who graduated high school at 17. In fact I graduated in December my senior year (a semester early) because I hated high school. Let me rephrase that…I HATED high school. I’m sure it had a lot to do with my specific situation and the fact that I went to 5 different high schools because my mother deemed it necessary to move all over the country. I’m sure for some people high school is all the sunshine and daisies it’s made out to be but at 17 I just wanted out. I needed out. And I vowed school was for people who liked social settings and the constant gossip of who’s with who, things I couldn’t care less about.

At 17 I wasn’t nearly mature or sure enough of myself to make such an enormous decision like going to college. Too much pressure, too expensive to commit to without even having a clue as to who I wanted to be, too many decisions, too many more days sitting in a classroom, plus I just finished! Isn’t some sort of break due?

I admire anyone who knows what the want to do for the rest of their lives at 17. And some people really do, some people have deep desires to grow up and be a doctor saving lives, some people feel their purpose in front of a classroom passing on knowledge, some people think dinosaurs are so cool they can’t wait to be digging up fossils in a desert somewhere, I admire all of that. Even if you’re 30 and you’ve finally realized your want to own your own business and go to business school, knowing what you want to do is half the battle and I admire people deciding essentially what they were born to do.

I got my first job at 16 and had it until the beginning of this year, when I decided to drop everything and follow my dreams. I moved up quickly in the company I worked for and could have made a very decent career out of it, but now that I’m positive as to who I’m meant to be in this world I refuse to settle for any other  job. I used to think college was something I could just ignore all together but 6 years out of high school I’m finally ready to participate.

So this winter semester I’ll start my freshman year at 25 years old (turning 25 in January) and I’m genuinely excited about it. I hope school is a ton more enjoyable when you’re working for something you’re actually interested in.

Also I hope freshman hazing isn’t really a thing.
